You have the traffic. Analytics shows people landing on your site every day. But the phone is quiet and the inbox is not moving. This is one of the most frustrating positions for a small business to be in and it is more common than most agencies admit.
The good news is that traffic without enquiries is almost always a fixable problem. Here are the most common causes.
The site does not clearly say what you do
This sounds too simple to be the problem. It rarely is. Many business websites bury the actual offer beneath a hero image that looks nice but says nothing useful. A visitor should be able to understand within five seconds what you do, who you do it for and why they should choose you over the next option on their list. If your homepage leads with a vague tagline and no specifics, a large proportion of visitors will leave before they have read anything meaningful.
There is no obvious next step
Every page on your site should have a clear and obvious call to action. Not a small link buried in the footer, a visible, compelling prompt that tells the visitor exactly what to do next. "Get a free estimate", "Book a consultation" or "Call us today" placed prominently, repeatedly and in a colour that stands out from the background. If a visitor has to hunt for your contact details you have already lost most of them. Our Edinburgh web design approach puts conversion architecture at the centre of every build.
The site is slow
Page speed is directly linked to bounce rate. Visitors who wait more than three seconds for a page to load leave at a dramatically higher rate than those who get an instant response. If your site is running on shared hosting with unoptimised images, every additional second of load time is costing you enquiries. This is measurable and fixable. Speed improvements are often among the highest-return technical changes a business can make.
There is nothing to build trust
People buy from businesses they trust, and trust online is built through social proof. Real photos of your work and your team. Testimonials from named clients. Google review scores displayed prominently. Case studies that show the outcome not just the process. If your site looks like a generic template with stock photography and no evidence of real work, visitors have no reason to believe you are any better than the ten other results they found. Every site we build is structured to surface this kind of evidence clearly.
The contact process is too complicated
A long contact form that asks for ten fields before a visitor has decided they even want to talk to you will kill enquiries. Ask for a name, an email and what they need. That is enough to start a conversation. Add a phone number as an alternative. Make the form easy to find, a dedicated contact page is fine but the fastest path to an enquiry is a button in the navigation that is always visible.
What to do about it
Most of these problems are fixable without a full rebuild, though sometimes the underlying structure of the site makes patching inefficient and a fresh build is the better investment.
